This is the main cave, the temple dedicated to Shiva. You can imagine how was the mountain before they began sharpening the rock, and measure the amount of work it requires. They began by the top.
Rock face inside
Absolutely gorgeous !! Everything has been sculpted in one single rock ! It's the hugest and most complex statue in the world !
And it goes on...
You can see how many statues have been broken by intolerant muslim vandals
Beautiful tree outside the caves.
The upcoming pictures have been shot in the Jains caves. The process was the same : everything is sculpted in one single rock.
This is Aurangzeb's tomb. Very simple. It lays in a Muslim holy city, about 3 km from Ellora. There still are muslims to honore this tomb, which is guarded within a Mosque
MAY ALL BEINGS BE HAPPY !

Ellora caves
The work in the Ellora caves began around year 600. There are 34 caves. The first ones were sculpted by Buddhists monks. Then came Hindus, and finally Jains. People worked there during almost 500 years. The main cave is Hindu. It is still a temple dedicated to Shankara (Shiva). It is the biggest sculpted monolith in the world. About 7000 workers worked on it for 150 years. It is absolutely amazing !!! It almost worth all the Egyptian sculptures !
